Adams Elementary School has a fleet of bikes for PE classes

THANK YOU to Blake Garnand, fifth-grade teacher, Andy Martin, science lab specialist, Sean Federbusch, fifth-grade teacher, Julie Churchman, PE Specialist & Louis Andaloro, expert bike mechanics & certified League Cycling Instructor who have been leading a Bike Club at Adams Elementary!
Students in grades 4-6 have been learning how to build and repair a bike.

  More photos

Last year, the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition/Bici Centro donated 10 bikes to the club so participants at the end of the year, could take home with a bike that they refurbished.

This year, SB Bike donated TWENTY SEVEN bikes: 15 small bikes for the creation of a PE fleet for 1st-2nd graders and 12 BMX or 24" bikes for 5th-6th graders.
The club started with about 20 kids. About 10 of them came on a regular basis, the others came when they could.
Since mid January after 18 after-school meetings, participants have built up the bike fleet and they have refurbished their own bikes just in time for the Summer.

The typical class starts with a mini lesson by Louis Andaloro who often brought interesting bicycles to show the kids (mtn, touring, racing, commuter, classic, and a tandem) and lead discussions with them about both his own and their cycling interests. He also showed them specialized bike repair tools and lead demonstrations and discussion on a variety of common repairs and maintenance. Participants then broke up into groups and worked on bike repair.

At the end of May, PE Specialist Julie Churchman who has been teaching first- and second-grade students how to ride a bike during their PE class says: "Having a bike fleet has been such a positive experience for the kids: they love it! Many of them never learned to ride because they never had a bike. The smiles on their face when they start pedaling on their own are priceless. I have the best job in the world!"
Eastside Rides: great success!

For the first time, a bilingual bike class for families was offered on Saturday, May 18th at the Franklin Neighborhood Center.

    Numbers speak by themselves:

The collaboration and the hard work of four groups made this event a reality: thank you to the City of Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, COAST and Traffic Solutions!

37 youth & 20 adults participated in the event: they all attended a bilingual powerpoint presentation about bike safety (be legal, be predictable, be visible and ride a bike in working condition).

10 participants received a bike refurbished by Bici Centro

42 went home with a helmet from COAST

More than 20 volunteers helped with registrations, bike repairs, bike fitting, handling skills on the parking lot and the group ride around the neighborhood.

A THANK YOU note from Jessica Grant, Project Planner, City of Santa Barbara who spearheaded the event:

"Thank you to Lori for allowing this event to be part of CycleMAYnia. It was truly a great synergy of efforts with the City, Traffic Solutions, SBBC and COAST in making this event become a reality.

Thank you to Ricardo for allowing this event to be held at the Franklin Center. It was a great facility to have this event at. Thank you also Ricardo also for helping spread the word about this event to the many families that frequent the center.

Carmen, your presentation was amazing! You did a great job engaging everyone. I had the benefit of facing the audience during the presentation and it was cool to see the moms/dads/grandmas/older siblings whispers back and forth to the kids on the various concepts being taught. Both adults and kids had great questions and participation.

Kudos to Kim and the rest of the helmet fitting crew. I definitely picked up some new pointers on what to say to kids (including my own) when they say their helmet is too tight.

Great job Robert and the rest of the parking lot drills team! There was a lot going on and the kids had the biggest smiles on their faces. They were sooooo into it.

Extraordinary Santa Barbara Women honored for Cycling Volunteerism

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 2:00pm at the
Finish line of Amgen Tour of California on Cabrillo Blvd, across from Fess Parker
Santa Barbara Hotel, Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition will be
honoring three inspirational Santa Barbara Women with the second annual Velo
Wings Award for making cycling safer and more of an option for our community.
The three awardees are

Christine Bourgeois for her steadfastly promoting safe bicycling for transportation and recreation in Santa Barbara County,

Denise Clark for twenty years of inspiring women to cycle and encouraging the next generation of riders in Santa Barbara County and

Jill Glass for being an advocate for women’s cycling and raising awareness of the sport of women’s bike racing.

Bourgeois is a certified League Cycling Instructor. Serving as the Education Director
for the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition she has been leading the development and
implementation of a countywide education campaign to promote safe bicycling for
transportation and recreation for children and adults. She has been expanding
successful after-school youth Earn-A-Bike programs and offering bilingual adult
bike clinics for workplaces. Through these efforts, riders of all ages learn safe
riding techniques and basic bike mechanics, gaining confidence, bike skills and life
skills.Clark, a native Santa Barbaran and an accountant has been training and
competitively road (bike) racing for the last 21 years including the successful
completion of the arduous Race Across America relay. She is a member of B4T9
Cycling and Echelon Santa Barbara, currently serving on their board. For the past
twelve years Clark has organized a group of dedicated riders that gather twice a
week to ride, train, socialize and mentor new riders. Clark inspires fellow cyclists
and helps others to ride strong and safe.

Glass, a champion bike racer, started coaching cyclists over 25 years ago and has
shared her passion for cycling with athletes of all levels. Many women cyclists in
Santa Barbara area have benefited from the inspiration and encouragement that
Glass has provided. Fifteen years ago, she created a weekly "no-drop" bike ride
specifically for women to encourage them to experience riding on the road in a safe,
fun environment and to promote the positive experience of women's bike racing.
Through the supportive group ride and with her coaching, many have gained the
skills necessary to become confident road cyclists.

These efforts are increasing the health and safety of members of our community by
providing education, training, and confidence building, making safe transportation
available to all in our community. Ed France, Executive Director of the Santa
Barbara Bicycle Coalition says: “These women are incredible. Each one commits
countless hours to our community combining their passions for cycling with a desire
to empower others. They are an inspiration to all of us.”

The Velo Wings Awards honor extraordinary Santa Barbara women cyclists who are
leaders in our community. The best ideas often come from conversations while
cycling. Last year, while enjoying a no-drop ride, a group of ladies talked about the
lack of recognition for women cyclists. The first Velo Wings Awards were presented
in 2012 with support from Whole Foods Market, the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition,
B4T9 Women's Cycling Team & the Facebook group "Neon Girls Cycling".CycleMAYnia
CycleMAYnia is a month long celebration reaching thousands of Santa Barbara
Cyclists and community members with wide-ranging bike events for all created by a
collaboration of community members and organizations joining together to
organize awesome bike events throughout the county. CycleMAYnia is a
partnership between Traffic Solutions and Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition.

Tickets Now Available: Singletrack High Screening
What: Screening local filmmakers’ new documentary Singletrack High

When: Thursday May 16, 7 p.m.

Where: Lobero Theater

Why: Raise funds for the SB Bike Coalition’s mobile trailer project

Tickets: http://www.lobero.com/events/single-track-high/

We’ve told you about Singletrack High, the documentary showcasing the high school
mountain biking movement that will help SB Bike bring the joy of biking to more local
youth. Tickets are now available (link above) for the May 16 screening at the Lobero.

Funds raised will help SB Bike purchase and stock a trailer full of tools, spare parts, and
mountain bikes. The trailer will allow us to bring our programs to local schools, as well
as get kids who might not be able to afford a mountain bike out on weekend rides in our
front and backcountry.

Singletrack High explores positive outcomes of keeping youth on bikes at an age
when many are “trading in two wheels four,” as one of the documentary subjects puts it.
The film, which has enjoyed multiple sold-out screenings on the first leg of its coast-to-
coast tour, takes an insider's look at the National Interscholastic Cycling Association’s
(NICA) NorCal High School Cycling League, following a diverse group of students
through the 2012 high school mountain bike racing season.

Santa Barbara-born filmmakers, Jacob and Isaac Seigel-Boettner, are excited to bring

their documentary “home to the place where we first fell in love with mountain biking.”

Jacob adds that the film was definitely inspired by the after-school mountain bike club

he and his brother started as students at San Marcos High School in 2004.

The screening will be made possible with the generous support of Montecito Bank

& Trust (Golden Hub Sponsor), the Towbes Group, Inc. (Silver Spoke Sponsor),

and Bronze Bearing Sponsors: American Riviera Bank, Bartlett Pringle & Wolf,

Hazard's Cyclesport, Agility Capital, and Santa Barbara Middle School.

Supporting Sponsors include Santa Barbara High School Don's Net Cafe, Santa

Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers, and the Santa Barbara Bicycle
Coalition.

Tell Jerry Brown to stop vetoing the three foot rule to protect cyclists

Dear Gov. Brown: With the failing struggle to maintain sprawl draining our municipalities' budgets, we must do everything we can to promote bicycling for local travel, which will reduce wear and tear on infrastructure and alleviate road and parking congestion. Yet careless motorists frequently "buzz" cyclists, with often dire results--worse, we often see posts and comments erroneously claiming that cyclists have no right to the road, and that it is permissible to engage in this sort of intimidation against them.

Your repeated vetoes of three-foot passing bills have sent a signal to the population that cyclists are expendable and that only drivers matter to you.

Please support--or initiate!--the next safe passing bill to protect the thousands of cyclists who are doing their part to protect our environment and our economy both.

Note: A proposed amendment to AB 1371 would effectively result in a safe-passing law if signed by Gov. brown.

I can’t tell you how many times people complain about “cyclists” who run red lights, blow through stop signs, ride without lights at night or and don’t pay for the roads. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me that cyclists should be taught the rules of the road and given a test like motorists, I could retire and move to Copenhagen where those things actually happen.

But it surprised me to still hear these tired myths brought up in response to sincere requests to level the playing field when innocent people riding bicycles or walking are killed by someone driving a car who has been proven to be negligent. It is one thing to complain about “scofflaws” and quite another to tell someone who has lost a loved one or friend that anyone walking or bicycling deserves what they get because roads are meant for cars and all “cyclists” are self-righteous, spandex wearing law breakers.

SB Bike Can Help You Promote Health and Wellness at Your Workplace
A recent trend has forward-thinking companies promoting health and wellness and active lifestyle
programs for their employees. The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition can help your workplace join the
ranks. SB Bike will come to your workplace or community group and teach a one-hour workshop on
cycling. The sessions can cover anything bike related: laws, skills, and basic gear; the ins and outs of commuting on a bicycle; riding in traffic; and more. And the material can be tailored to your group’s needs.

SB Bike has several options for workplace audiences, including “lunch and learn” presentations or
practical session on bikes. The structure of the sessions is very flexible, and League Certified Instructors are available in both English and Spanish.

A class is six participants. To schedule or for more information, contact education coordinator, Christine Bourgeois or call 699 6301.

Help Celebrate SB Bike’s Fifth Anniversary and Bici Centro’s Grand Opening
Come celebrate five years of cycling toward “a culture where the majority of trips include a bicycle”!
SB Bike invites all to share in the revelry, marking Bici Centro’s fifth year and new grand opening on
Saturday, April 6 from 1 to 6 pm, with ribbon cutting and announcements at 2pm. Join in games; food, and festivities.

Thanks to dedication and community support, Bici Centro has made great strides (or better yet,
rotations) since its beginnings five years agoundefineda self-described “ragtag group of volunteers who secured
a 900 sq. ft. office in the Casa de la Raza Cesar Chavez center to host a community bike repair and
education center”. The last five years have seen 3,800 bike repair visits; well over 1,300 eventsundefinedbike
repair days, bike valet at community events, classes, and workshopsundefinedmany donations of refurbished
bikes; and the launch of an 18-hour, earn-a-bike, after-school program, Pedal Power, that has graduated
over 200 youth, ready to ride with mechanic and streets skills.

When Bici Centro and SB Bike recently put out the call for support in order to secure a new facility,
92 people contributed a total of $46,000 to the cause. The funds, made up of donations from $15 to
$10,000, covered 2013 rent, facility improvements, and a substantial deposit on the new space. After a
period of two years struggling to find a government or non-profit owned space to host Bici Centro, the
outpouring of support allowed SB Bike to rent a market-rate building and fired up the organization like
never before. That means more programs; increased advocacy and outreach; and a new schedule with
more hours at the DIY repair and education shop.

Bici Centro is located at 434 Olive Street (just around the corner from its storefront address of 506 East
Haley).

Singletrack High: Local Film to Highlight Mountain Bike Craze / Bring Biking to More Youth

Screening at the Lobero on May 16 at 7 pm; get tickets at the Lobero box office

What happens when enthusiasm and advocacy meet a gnarly, adventurous sport? Big ideas unfold.
Two local filmmakers, Jacob and Isaac Seigel-Boettner, who have shot film around the globe, focused
their last production on a subject near and dear to not only their hearts but those of many in the Santa
Barbara cycling community: mountain biking. Specifically, the film highlights a new phenomenon that is taking the country by storm undefined high school mountain bike racers and a future where mountain biking is a regular team sport at schools. The Seigel-Boettner brothers, both graduates of San Marcos High, founded Pedal Born pictures, and Singletrack High, as is much of their work, is filmed in an intimate documentary style. The Seigel-Boettners just kicked off the screening premier, and the show is selling out everywhere.

How do local bike enthusiasts and youth advocates fit in? Big-time. Another young Santa Barbara local,
Dylan Carmody, sophomore at Santa Barbara High School and a leader of the SBHS Bike Club, took note
of the film and took action. He contacted the Seigel-Boettners, as well as some local organizations he
knows well. Now, four organizations, all advocates for cycling and youth, have partnered to bring Singletrack High to the Lobero and parlay the event into a big payout for local youth. These partners are headline sponsor, the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition; SBHS Bike Club (under the umbrella of Dons Net Cafe); Santa Barbara Middle School; and the SB Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. Advocates for cycling and kids.

Singletrack High will be screening on Thursday May 16 at 7 pm at the Lobero Theatre.

What do the partner sponsors hope to achieve? In short, to expose more young people to the joy of
cycling and mountain biking. Through this screening, the sponsor groups intend to raise awareness
and accessibility so that more youth can get out and enjoy mountain biking. Specifically, they hope to
purchase a trailer equipped with tools and bikes. The trailer will be available weekly to the SBHS club.
It will allow SB Bike to expand its youth cycling education program, offering two-week bike training and
maintenance classes to schools around the county. The coalition also wants to host youth mountain bike rides, events that will allow young people to join a group ride by simply showing up at the designated trailheads. These are programs that would bring cycling to youth who may otherwise never get the opportunity.

How can you get involved? Get a ticket and check out the screening of Singletrack High. Tickets are
available through the Lobero box office. Or become a corporate sponsor. (Along with the partner
sponsor group, Carmody, along with Enma Nuñez, a senior at SBHS, are actively seeking corporate
sponsorships. Tune in for an update on a grant their seeking. To learn more or become a sponsor,
