Whether you are a member, a event goer, or a resident in one of our primarily Spanish speaking neighborhoods, the bicycle coalition is looking to you to help us shape policy on bicycling.

Earth Day Survey: We are going to host ~$10,000 area residents on Earth Day 2011, and we aren't letting the opportunity go to waste.  With large scale maps and our new community survey, we'll be asking as many event goers as possible what they think can improve our area for bicycling. Want to help, please volunteer with us on earth day.

Member Survey: Lookout, it's coming. Sometime this June we will be requesting your input on helping us shape our vision into a winnable strategy for a bicycle friendly Santa Barbara county. Your membership counts and there has never been a more important time for a broad base of our voices to be heard.

Spanish Language Outreach: Starting the weekend after earthday, both the westside and eastside residents will see a visit by the 'taller movil' or mobile bike shop, which will also function to asses resident- with an emphasis to spanish speakers- knowledge of coalition offerings, interest in various offerings, and opinions as to bicycling improvements that will help them. We look forward to this launch, learn more and, if bi-lingual in spanish and english, please consider volunteering.

    On the horizon-

County Bicycle Master Plan- Set to get underway this summer, county transportation staff will be hosting rounds of public input in order to update their bicycle planning- this is practically a must for any project to be considered in the capital planning process. The county oversees unincorporated areas like those between the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria on the south coast, and north county areas in between Lompoc, Santa Maria, and Goleta. Do you live or ride thru one of those areas? stay tuned for how to get involved?

City of Santa Barbara Master Plan- Never before in the last few decades has their been such a hostile climate to bicycle improvements at the City council level, which is going to make this master plan update one of the most controversial processes you would see on the otherwise progressive south coast. While the City has gone from 3% to 5% bicyclist commuters, vocal critics are gaining influence on how we 'share the road.' Stay tuned for public forums later this year.

Measure A funding- In addition to $140 million dollars of Measure A funds to widen 101,(which overall will cost 3/4 of a billion dollars) us Bike/Ped folks and Safe Routes to Schoolers get to help steer $800,000 in alternative transportation funding. The coalition, which advocated for Measure A, has a seat at the table, and is watching the process to ensure that 1. these funds are used in the most effective way possible, and 2. that bicycle education programs like ours have a fair shake at applying for grants to expand the offerings.

Want to get involved in advocacy work with the coalition? One- if you haven't yet, join and otherwise please attend one of our communications, Advocacy, and Membership committee meetings.

Santa Barbara obviously has a great Bike coalition website and calendar- but let's face it, bike culture needs a space for unofficial informal events- and something that doesn't belong to any one club, shop, or organization.  Los Angeles and Orange county have been blessed to have Bike Boom over the past few years, but we haven't had a 3rd party calendar like that. Well. here it is:

On March 28th, the first true day of Spring Break at Santa Barbara's public schools, 17 young freestyle riders gathered in the evening at Cranky's on State St.  What was the appeal for these boys?  They had the opportunity to spend the night in California's only public, indoor skatepark - A-Town in Atascadero!  While the drive to the park was filled with the nervous energy of youth (lots of youth) excited to ride their bikes on the ramps, the night lived up to their expectations with many novice riders shredding the mini-bowl by morning.  With 4 chaperones - 3 of them acting as coaches, the boys learned to share the park: they grilled hotdogs and made s'mores on a bonfire, some of them engaged in a ferocious battle of flashlight tag, and a few of them even managed to stay awake the entire night - raging on the ramps despite the 45 degree temps at 4:30 AM!  Even though no one could keep their eyes open on the way home, this is a trip they'll definitely be looking forward to repeating...as soon as the adults have recovered!  Want to find out more about the trip and learn about upcoming events in the area?  Check out Cranky's blog at www.crankysbikes.com.

Author's Note: This trip represents the second of its kind in as many months.  It is a shame that the young freestyle riders in our community do not have a legal facility to practice inside the city, and Santa Barbara is losing revenue on events like this.  A skatepark that allows BMX bikes could not only serve as an economic draw for our city, but it could also help to foster the growth of our talented youth.  Santa Barbara could produce the next Michael Jordan of freestyle bikes, but in our current state it would be a true underdog story.

Editor's Note: (hey why not) While there is a BMX course at Elings Park, freestyle bmx is not easily accessible on the south coast. Our one public skate park is not open to BMXing, a policy that merits reconsideration. What do you think? leave a comment.

photo: Maria Ignacio flood repair crewHere's the crew! From left we have Robert, Doris, Owen, Mark, Nancy, Wilson, Brigitta. And a bikerby named James joined us too, but missed the pic.

We spent 1-1/2 hours digging and sweeping the deep and heavy ravages of the recent flood under the Maria Ignacio bike path/Hollister underpass. We're proud of our work and know you will like it too. Ride it and don't worry about braking - at least until the next storm hits (hopefully next winter).

We are not the only citizens who spend uncounted hours maintaining Maria Ignacio bike path. Other neighborhood residents are out regularly mowing (the dude by the bridge) and, (most labor-intensive) painting over the repeatedly refreshed graffitti.

Many thanks to all who keep this vital route open and beautiful for all of us!

Yet another ambitious and progressive bike master plan passes. The dominoes are falling towards a bike friendly country. Not in Santa Barbara, however, not unless you have something to do with it...
